Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor

SolarWinds Recognized in the 2020 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Application Performance Monitoring

Evaluated for the second straight year, the company continues to be recognized for its ability to execute and completeness of vision in the APM space

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- SolarWinds (NYSE:SWI), a leading provider of powerful and affordable IT management software, today announced it has been recognized in the April 2020 Gartner® Magic Quadrant® for Application Performance Monitoring (APM) based on the completeness of vision and ability to execute for its APM suite of products – Pingdom®, AppOptics, and Loggly®. The company believes its dedication to delivering simple, powerful, and affordable APM tools validates its recognition for the second year in a row, reflecting its position in the APM market.

Gartner defines APM as a “suite of monitoring software comprising digital experience monitoring (DEM), application discovery, tracing and diagnostics, and purpose-built artificial intelligence for IT operations.”* The report evaluated 15 different software vendors on 15 criteria.

“At SolarWinds, we believe application performance can be synonymous with business success, and cost and complexity shouldn’t be prohibiting factors in achieving it. Over our 20-plus year history, we’ve been committed to IT pros in delivering products that are not only easy to use, but easy to buy, and affordable,” said Jim Hansen, vice president of product strategy, SolarWinds. “We consider our inclusion in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for APM Suites as further testament of our mission to help ease this burden and unlock the power of APM for all with features and functionality that help reduce complexity for a fraction of competing prices.”

In addition to the analyst recognition, SolarWinds is a 2019 Gartner Peer Insight Customers' Choice in Application Performance Monitoring with an overall rating of 4.7/5 stars and an 89% willingness to recommend rate. SolarWinds users reviewed the products evaluation and contracting, integration and deployment, service and support, and product capabilities, among other aspects.

"AppOptics has integrations with a lot of frameworks and supports all major languages. This is a major plus when your applications are built on a different framework. The live code profiling feature is very useful to drill down on a performance issue reported. It helps me to identify the bottleneck of the issue as I can very much inspect the request transaction flowing through the whole system,” said a design and automation engineer in the manufacturing industry.

COVID-19 Outbreak

Five IT Business Considerations for the COVID-19 Outbreak

The COVID-19 (or Coronavirus) outbreak has created an unprecedented global event with implications far beyond healthcare. It’s fundamentally changing how organizations run their business and IT operations.

U.S. citizen travel has been banned to multiple countries, global businesses such as Amazon, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft have instituted work from home policies, universities and schools across the nation have temporarily closed their doors, and large group gatherings have been cancelled, thereby limiting events and conferences to online-only experiences.

All of this amplifies stress on IT professionals to keep organizations and employees up and running, securely. IT pros will be driven to respond to rapidly changing conditions, including:

  1. Capacity and Performance The need for and reliance on collaboration systems such as Cisco® Webex, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom will be emphasized, resulting in a potential system capacity and performance overload and greater need to monitor performance and availability.
  2. Security – Newly remote employees may not have the right security protection and will need IT pro assistance installing VPNs, updating patches, and obtaining access rights. A high volume of remote employees can test firewalls and saturate VPNs, causing performance and availability issues or an open threat vector. If VPNs are bypassed, bad actors will take advantage, challenging organizations to filter the signal from the noise.
  3. Application Access – Access to critical apps whether they’re on-premises or in the cloud changes in nature due to a higher volume of remote workers. Monitoring application, infrastructure, and network performance, and then quickly troubleshooting problems cannot rely on historical baselining. The complexity of keeping services up and running is magnified when time is of the essence.
  4. IT Support – Remote workers will undoubtedly need more support, which can overwhelm the service desk and tech pros and increase wait and resolution times for organizations without a remote access solution.
  5. Business Continuity – Plans will be tested on a global stage forcing tech pros to find and fill gaps quickly.

How IT Service Desk Pros Can Support the New Reality of Work From Home

It’s nearly impossible to overstate the impact that the COVID-19 virus has had on businesses around the world. The unusual circumstances have forced organizational leaders to prepare and respond quickly. For almost any organization where remote work is possible, “work from home” is the new reality for the foreseeable future.

Day-to-day operations depend on IT, and the service desk is defending the front lines. Remote employees need support, perhaps now more than ever. They need access to software, applications, and an unfamiliar technology infrastructure (their home). In many cases, they need equipment from quarantined buildings, they are installing brand new equipment, or they are connecting to older equipment in their homes.

What goes into IT’s preparation? How are they adjusting to these challenges? What surprises are service providers encountering? A few of our SolarWinds Service Desk customers were kind enough to share some of their experiences to date.

Response is short-term; preparation is long-term

If you’ve spent recent weeks procuring equipment, testing networks, and responding directly to users, you’re not alone. But much of the important preparation happens organically, over a long period of time. Though no one predicted this pandemic specifically, plenty of IT and business leaders have prioritized a shift toward digital flexibility, which is helping to offset the risk of lost productivity for many forward-thinking organizations.

“Though there are certainly short term measures you can take for something like this, the versatility is years in the making,” adds Jason Thompson, IT Desktop Manager for the Town of Gilbert, Arizona. “The backing from senior leadership is crucial in prioritizing technology in your workforce, and I’m grateful that we’ve received that support.”

“If there’s a strategic update that you think is important, prioritize it,” says Azunna Anyanwu, IT Director for Aronson LLC.

Just a few months ago, Anyanwu and his team doubled Aronson’s bandwidth to support the employees’ growing dependence on digital tools.

“Now we’re glad we did, because we have not encountered any issues with over 250 people suddenly on VPN,” he says.

“When your organization understands the value of technology and how to use technology, it makes your workforce so much more powerful,” says Eugene Mejia, Deputy CTO for the Town of Gilbert. “In our case, when IT made everything available remotely, our other departments were ready to go.”

Managing the influx of tickets

Thompson’s IT support team typically averages about 1200 tickets per month for Town of Gilbert employees, but they responded to over 500 in one day during the early stages of remote work. In this case, the Town of Gilbert took unique steps to collect the data it needed to work through requests quickly.

“We were able to spin up some new forms and workflows, which allowed us to quickly deploy resources and people to remote locations,” Thompson explains. “We’re extremely busy preparing laptops, helping people get connected, and answering help desk tickets, so the new forms give us an efficient way to prioritize and work through all of the demand.”

The influx has been typical for help desks all over the world, especially in organizations shifting suddenly to remote work. And, while it may seem obvious, it’s worth noting that a single portal for IT tickets is crucial, especially in the unique circumstances presented by sudden remote work.

“It’s so important that we have one place to direct everyone,” says Chris Sanchez, Senior Manager of End User Support at Zoro. “Let’s get it all in one place so we can prioritize and escalate. There’s bound to be a huge influx of pop-up issues because everything is suddenly different, but this helps us work through them efficiently.”

Responding to tickets is easier with more context—be it from the requesters or from the asset data within your ITSM tool. One key for Anyanwu’s team at Aronson is the ability to quickly pull up inventory and contracts within the platform.

“The inventory and contracts section of the tool helped me respond,” he explains. “It’s critical for me to know right where everything is, and who I should contact if our people need access to something they don’t have.”

“Be the Solution”

All of the IT leaders we spoke with urged poise, patience, and empathy for workforces adjusting to the new normal.

“We have a huge group of people that have never worked from home before, and IT needs to play a role in making them comfortable,” Sanchez adds. “They have distractions. They have kids at home. Not to mention they might have no idea how technology works when they leave the building—and that’s okay. We need to lean into that and be a solution for them.

“We are working very hard on the customer experience,” says Thompson. “We need to be consistently available, and we need to respond with some type of value in whatever they’re dealing with.”

And frankly, what they’re dealing with is not always a familiar issue for IT.

“We know that we’ll continue to see tickets that we wouldn’t normally see,” says Anyanwu. “People have never connected business tools to their home WiFi or their home printer, so we’re making some exceptions on the types of things we normally support.”

Above all, these IT leaders stressed that this is a cooperative effort, within their organizations and beyond.

“I don’t want to miss the point that we’ve been working closely with other municipalities to share ideas,” says Mejia. “We’re all in a unique scenario right now, and all of us in IT have an opportunity to keep people working at full capacity.”

SolarWinds Broadens Systems Portfolio with Unified Infrastructure Management Enhancements

Portfolio enhancements to be showcased at VMworld 2018 US

AUSTIN, Texas – August 21, 2018 — SolarWinds, a leading provider of powerful and affordable IT management software, today unveiled a wave of updates to the SolarWinds® Orion® Platform, and its product portfolio. The enhancements span multiple products, with SolarWinds debuting the latest versions of Server & Application Monitor (SAM), Virtualization Manager (VMAN), Storage Resource Monitor (SRM), and introducing SolarWinds Server Configuration Monitor (SCM).

The enhancements enable unified infrastructure management for technology practitioners, designed to help them quickly identify performance issues and correlations between all layers of the technology stack.

“Technology professionals managing increasingly complex and distributed IT environments require monitoring tools that transcend the challenges introduced by hybrid IT,” said Christoph Pfister, executive vice president of products, SolarWinds. “The portfolio updates are designed to meet those challenges, providing a unified platform to help IT professionals see the bigger picture by monitoring, mapping, and proving where there are performance issues in IT environments.”

SolarWinds Delivers Windows System and Application Change Detection through New Server Configuration Monitor (SCM 1.0)

Built on the Orion Platform, a modular, scalable, unified monitoring architecture, the first generation of the SolarWinds Server Configuration Monitor (SCM 1.0) is designed to provide visibility into configuration changes on Windows® servers and applications that have taken place over time, helping technology professionals correlate configuration changes to performance. SCM can be used to quickly detect changes on a node, provide customizable reporting, alerting, and performance correlation.

“SCM picked up on things I didn't realize had changed,” said Jez Marsh, founder, Silverback Systems. “I think many people will be excited to learn about the capabilities and will find it useful, especially MSPs, who have commoditized-based spin up and spin down of virtual machines.”

SCM’s integration with SolarWinds PerfStack™ dashboard empowers technology professionals with a side-by-side view into how configuration settings are affecting overall performance metrics for applications. Cross-functional collaboration accelerates problem solving and allows the IT team to visually correlate data from multiple sources. SCM is also equipped to help technology professionals verify changes on applications and systems, such as unauthorized modifications to standard server configurations, for example, a critical capability in today’s ever-changing, complex environments.

Deeper DevOps Environment Monitoring in SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor 6.7

SAM is designed to provide end-to-end visibility, as well as server and application performance monitoring, using agent-based and agentless technologies across multiple data centers, remote locations, and the cloud. The latest update, version 6.7, now includes container monitoring for Docker®, Kubernetes®, and Mesos®, and can assist in troubleshooting container-based applications and workloads, with the goal of improving monitoring and troubleshooting DevOps environments.

This enhancement is designed to take technology professionals into the future: in the SolarWinds IT Trends Report 2018, 44 percent of respondents ranked containers as the most important technology priority today, and 38 percent of respondents ranked containers as the most important technology priority three to five years from now.

Optimize SDS Monitoring with VMware vSAN Support in Virtualization Manager (VMAN) 8.3

The latest update, version 8.3, offers customers vSAN storage support. Through the update, users can view and monitor VMware® software defined storage (vSAN) alongside virtualization performance, from the same console. Customers can also use recommendations to help take the guesswork out of optimization, as well as model capacity planning scenarios for today and tomorrow’s workloads.

Integration with the Orion Platform can deliver deeper virtualization insights, broader infrastructure reporting, informative alerting, cross-stack performance data and metrics, and improved virtualization management.

New Support for Huawei Devices and Expanded Hardware Health Support for Dell EMC Isilon, NetApp Arrays with Storage Resource Monitor (SRM) 6.7

The latest version of SolarWinds SRM (version 6.7) adds support for Huawei® OceanStor® and Dorado™ devices and now features hardware health support for Dell EMC™ Isilon® and NetApp®, two industry-leading all-flash array vendors. With this extended support, SRM 6.7 can enable resource monitoring across a wider mix of infrastructures in multi-vendor environments to meet the needs of a broader set of customers.

SRM’s data integration with other SolarWinds products, including Virtualization Manager (VMAN) and Server & Application Monitor (SAM) through the Orion Platform, allows for end-to-end relationship mapping from application and virtualization through storage.

Unified Infrastructure Monitoring through Intelligent Orion Maps and Orion Platform Integration

Today’s IT teams are responsible for managing increasingly complex and distributed environments, yet many are still manually mapping their environment and its dependencies—a time-consuming task that can quickly become outdated. SolarWinds Intelligent Orion Maps, built on the Orion Platform, is designed to eliminate the need for manual maps and help users easily create and view custom, logical, contextual maps—in near real-time. With just a few clicks, technology professionals can use Intelligent Orion Maps to pull and display application and infrastructure dependencies when troubleshooting a new issue, as well as view virtualization platform recommendations in context application groups.

Exploring the adoption of newer strategies, such as adding analytics capabilities to applications or upgrading hardware or software, may shift the location of a bottleneck, but may not solve it altogether. Full visibility across all of these elements is needed to understand where an issue truly resides and improve uptime and performance.

Built on the Orion Platform, all the unified infrastructure management enhancements across SAM, VMAN, SRM, and SCM are designed to help technology professionals monitor their IT systems environment from application to spindle—to quickly find performance issues and correlations between all the layers. This also includes allowing IT teams to view and verify that any distributed and load-balanced software is also sufficiently distributed from a hardware infrastructure perspective. Integration with features like SolarWinds AppStack™, PerfStack, and AppInsights™ can help make the process of preventing and troubleshooting incidents easier than ever before for technology professionals.

SolarWinds will publicly demonstrate its updated infrastructure management portfolio (for the first time) at VMworld® 2018 US in Las Vegas, Nevada, starting on August 26. The SolarWinds booth number is 2301.

Are your networks 100% secure?

Written by

South Africa has recently seen an upsurge in data leaks, suggesting that mission-critical networks from organisations across all industries are at serious risk.

Recent findings by iAfrikan revealed that a database containing sensitive personal data leaked just under 1 million personal records of South African citizens online.

In 2017, many companies also experienced major cybersecurity breaches. According to a study by the Ponemon Institute, 7 out of 10 organisations say their security risk increased significantly in 2017, while only a third of organisations believe they have adequate resources to manage security effectively.

Cybercrime damages have also exceeded $600 billion in 2017, as revealed by McAfee and the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

These data leaks also indicate that networks and data in organisations, such as banks, legal firms, mining companies, and retail outlets, aren’t 100% secure.

Considering that nearly every citizen has a bank account or an account with a retail trader who may have vulnerability issues, it is imperative that these networks are managed efficiently, are up to date, and that organisations have a clear view of what is going on inside their networks.

Network monitoring and management

The reality is that every organisation is susceptible to a security breach, and no organisation can afford the subsequent impact.

Many companies aren’t constantly monitoring how their networks are performing or what the vulnerability is, and making sure that industry-standard configurations are being implemented when a vulnerability occurs. This is one of the main reasons data and networks aren’t 100% secure.

To help businesses prepare for these growing risks, ATS Network Management offers SolarWinds Network management, centralised threat detection, compliance reporting, forensic analysis and database performance monitoring.

The SolarWinds’ revolutionary network monitoring solution – Network Performance Monitor (NPM) – allows network engineers to manage hybrid networks as they grow, with end-to-end visibility.  Coupled with Log & Event Manager (LEM) and Network Configuration Manager (NCM), it offers centralised threat detection, incident awareness, compliance reports, and active response.

Using the software, IT departments can gain insight into the health and performance of service delivery networks, drill down into specific details, view histograms and baselines for key metrics, and monitor the entire infrastructure – all from a single customisable console.

It offers reduced outages, detection, diagnosis, and resolving of performance issues, as well as traffic viewing, configuration, and performance details for on-premise, hybrid, and cloud services.

It also sends intelligent alert notifications as vulnerabilities are detected, so users can manage them before they become critical.

To improve security, compliance, network vulnerability and authorised access the Solarwinds security suite augments NPM, four of which are highlighted below:

  • SolarWinds SIEM: Log & Event Manager – SIEM tests, detects, and reports on vulnerabilities by analysing logs on Firewall switches to see where vulnerabilities are and where security breaches could occur. It allows for instant improvement in security and compliance with an easy-to-use and affordable SIEM.
  • SolarWinds Log Manager for Orion is a powerful log management tool, fully integrated with the Orion Platform. With real-time log collection, analysis, and visualisation, users can gain out-of-the-box visibility into the performance and availability of their IT infrastructure.
  • SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM) – NCM integrates with NPM and other IT management solutions to supplement vulnerability testing on devices. In addition to vulnerability, it also provides compliance reports, ensuring customers are up to date with industry compliance standards.
  • User Device Tracker – The user device tracker is a module for the NPM and allows a user to track whatever may be connected to the network. This gives users visibility and insight to identify the type of rogue devices or unauthorised access there might be on the network. It provides users with graphical information in an instant – which means no waiting for a report to come out. It also gives the user the ability for immediate port shut-down from the interface.
  • Patch Manager – Many vulnerabilities occur from unpatched and outdated devices. ATS offers automated patching of Microsoft servers and 3rd-party apps for intuitive reporting to quickly address software vulnerabilities.

The SolarWinds security suite allows users to shut down the vulnerability or produce forensic analysis with in just a few hours of implementing the solution.

About ATS Network Management

ATS Network Management (Pty)Ltd was established in 1996 to provide our clients with cutting edge network management solutions. This includes diagnostics, analysis, performance management services as well as tools to enable the optimisation of their enterprise networks.

Today enterprise networks are delivering on the promise of client/server computing and web based distributed networks. Because they run the entire businesses, these networks are critical to the organisation’s ability to function and be productive. At the same time, the rapid growth of networking and the Internet increases the complexity and cost of designing and managing the computing environment.

As these systems grow in importance and functionality, enterprise networks become increasingly distributed, incorporating users and resources in remote sites. As such networks are complex, they require more resources from the organisations they serve. The network must be available around the clock and continually perform at prescribed levels.

Three things essential to effectively manage an enterprise network are:

Diagnostic capabilities, collecting real-time data on network usage, and being able to analyse this data.

For large enterprise networks, it is mandatory that these components be integrated, cover all topologies and work with all industry-standard components regardless of brand or operating system.

ATS Network Management is committed to tackle this challenge head-on through their range of network services and leading network monitoring products.

Leading the way with the SolarWinds product range as their main stream products, ATS Network Management has achieved the highest status of partnership with SolarWinds. This partnership enjoys almost 15 years of working together with SolarWinds which is one of the longest standing relationships worldwide.

About SolarWinds

SolarWinds’ mission has been to provide purpose-built products that are designed to make jobs easier for IT professionals, MSPs, and DevOps pros. Network Performance Monitor v12.2

Written by

We are very pleased to announce the release of SolarWinds® Network Insight for Cisco® Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA), now available in the latest versions of NPM, NCM, NTA, and UDT.

This innovation is important because in modern hybrid IT environments, firewalls provide critical connectivity to cloud-based assets. Cisco ASAs are the most popular, cutting-edge firewalls on the market. However, standard monitoring tools do not provide the needed visibility into key firewall functions such as VPN tunnel connectivity and failover status and availability.

This latest Network Insight fills a huge gap in how our end users manage their hybrid IT environments. In addition to providing in-depth analyses that go far beyond basic hardware health and statistics, it also presents data in a simplified functional model so that expert-level insights on ASA performance can be understood by non-expert users. We’re fulfilling our promise to deliver affordable and easy-to-use products that provide unmatched functionality.

Network Insight for ASA provides network administrators and engineers with:
• Enhanced visibility into:

     o VPN tunnel visibility (LAN-to-LAN)
o High availability and failover status
     o Hardware status
o Interface monitoring with critical configuration data, including security level
     o Connection count

• ACL monitoring:

o Filter, search, and view ACLs with the firewall rule browser
o Show relationships with ACLs, context, and objects
o Snapshot, version, compare, and back up ACL configs
o Analyze ACL configs and highlight shadowed, redundant, and unused rules

Combining this level of total visibility into a comprehensive hybrid IT monitoring system is an industry first. To support this exciting launch, please find attached visuals and social posts that you can use on your social media platforms.

You can also set up intelligent application performance alerts to find and fix issues before they impact business services and end-users.

With the ability to monitor over 200 applications from a single dashboard, you’ll also no longer need to waste time switching between multiple tools and custom scripts.

Proactively monitor server performance, capacity and hardware health

The SolarWinds Server and Application Monitor allows you to monitor the availability, response time and hardware health of multi-vendor physical and virtual servers.

You can also track CPU, memory and disk usage, forecast when capacity will run out, and remotely remediate server issues, such as terminating runaway processes, starting/stopping services, rebooting servers, and so forth.

The key features of the SolarWinds Server and Application Monitor include:

  • Automatic application discovery and dependency mapping: Download, install, automatically discover your environment, and start monitoring in about an hour. No professional services required.
  • Hit the ground running with pre-packaged alerts and reports: Eliminate false positives with intelligent baseline alerting. Easily customise built-in alerts and reports as needed.
  • One Web interface to monitor multi-vendor infrastructure: Powerful, affordable and easy-to-use tool that monitors 200+ applications and multi-vendor servers out of the box.
  • Monitor applications in public, private and hybrid cloud environments: Agentless software for on-premises monitoring. Use optional agent for application monitoring in the cloud.
  • Extensive customization—power to monitor what you want, how you want: Modify built-in templates by importing your existing custom scripts and Nagios® scripts to monitor custom applications.
  • Part of SolarWinds Orion line of IT management software: Seamlessly integrates with other Orion products including Network Performance Monitor for unified IT monitoring.
